Commonly known as the “watchdog” over taxpayer dollars, the County’s internal audit division consists of qualified accounting professionals who are required to have in-depth knowledge of auditing and accounting principles, practices and standards. These skills and knowledge base are necessary to properly perform all aspect of the audit function.
Internal Auditors responsibilities include but are not limited to:
 
·    Conducting periodic audits of row offices, tax collectors, various county departments and other county operations, as necessary
·    Investigating fraud and abuse
·    Evaluating the internal controls of the county
·    Checking for legal compliance
·    Monitoring the flow of state and federal funding to County offices
·    Developing account analyses
·    Assisting state and outside auditors
·    Interacting with state and federal agencies as necessary
 
Montgomery County’s Internal Auditors have assisted in numerous fraud cases which resulted in the successful conviction of the perpetrator(s).  In addition, Internal Audit has evaluated functions and made recommendations to many departments, row offices and tax collectors so that their duties can be performed more efficiently and in a cost-effective manner.
